What a name story can include

The Name Story Finder looks up a single name and shows what reference sources say about it. Depending on the name, its story can cover:

  • Meaning and origin. A name’s meaning is what its source words meant. Its origin is the language and earlier forms it developed from. Neither tells you where a particular family came from.
  • Pronunciation and spelling. Many names are said differently from place to place, and one name can have several accepted spellings.
  • Change across languages and time. As names travel between languages and scripts they are respelled, shortened and adapted, so one name can have related forms in many places. Our article on how names change across languages explains how this happens.

When sources disagree

Many names have origins that are uncertain, disputed or explained in more than one way, and the same spelling can belong to more than one name. When that happens, we say so and set out the main explanations rather than choosing the most appealing one.

Full profiles and short overviews

Some names have a full profile, checked against the sources it cites, with sections on meaning, pronunciation, history and related names.

For names without a full reviewed profile, the finder may show a short automatic overview of the name’s meaning and origin, generated from a focused search of two name reference sites, Behind the Name and Wiktionary. It is labelled as automatic, links to the pages it used and is not checked by an editor, so treat it as a starting point.

Our Sources & Editorial Approach page explains how information is chosen, checked and labelled.
